The historical ruins of Ercolano

Ancient Herculaneum were excavated four of the total of twenty acres which stretched. The urban layout was orthogonal, classic ancient Greece, with intersections at right angles. Herculaneum was found one sewer along the Cardo III, which collected the waters of the Forum and those of the watersheds, latrines and kitchens of houses that faced along this street.


The typical house in Herculaneum looks smaller than that of Pompeii; However, thanks to the conversion of the city in his last period in a recreation center, the houses were often decorated with elegant and gorgeous.


The only villa of otium found in Herculaneum is the Villa dei Papiri: situated outside the city walls, was discovered in 1750 and explored through tunnels until 1761 and today is still partly buried. Inside you were found 58 bronze statues and 21 marble and a collection of more than 1,700 papyrus, enclosed in boxes, belonging to the library of the house: it is still a small part of the entire collection still to find and treat papyrus of philosophical texts written in both Latin and greek.

Public buildings & playful:

The area of ​​the Forum, almost completely buried yet, does not follow the traditional pattern of rectangular squares in Rome: it is an area, off limits to the access of wagons, divided in two by an arch covered in marble and decorated with statues and frescoes : in its eastern part they were held civic activities, while in the western economic activities.

The Suburban Baths are located outside the city walls, near the Porta Marina and the funeral area dedicated to Marco Nonio Balbo attended by both men and women, have large windows along the perimeter walls and skylights on the roof, passed the 'input, there are two service rooms for the control of wet. In the atrium of the bath is preserved marble herm of Apollo, while in the waiting room or massage room remained intact stucco depicting naked warriors: the calidarium retains the swing of wooden door, the tepidarium is almost full from the pool and laconicum it is decorated with a mosaic floor depicting a crater with ivy.
